Life Hack of the Week
πΈ Stack Cashback into Real Wealth
Most people use cashback apps for small savings β but hereβs a smarter way: stack your cashback with micro-investments and let compounding do the heavy lifting.
How it works:
Download the UK cashback app Shopmium β get free groceries, discounts, and regular cashback offers.
Refer friends β Shopmium gives you Β£3 per referral (perfect to share in Saffa groups or at braais).
Funnel your cashback into savings or investments β small amounts add up faster than you think.
Automate and forget β even Β£50/month invested could grow into Β£10k in 10 years or Β£26k in 20 years.
Why it works for South Africans in the UK: weβre naturally budget-savvy, and by stacking small wins together, you can turn everyday spending into something that really matters.
How 433 Investors Unlocked 400X Return Potential
Institutional investors back startups to unlock outsized returns. Regular investors have to wait. But not anymore. Thanks to regulatory updates, some companies are doing things differently.
Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 regular people invested an average of $2,730. Today? They got a 400X buyout offer from the company, as Revolutβs valuation increased 89,900% in the same timeframe.
Founded by a former Zillow exec, Pacasoβs co-ownership tech reshapes the $1.3T vacation home market. Theyβve earned $110M+ in gross profit to date, including 41% YoY growth in 2024 alone. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.
The same institutional investors behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay backed Pacaso. And you can join them. But not for long. Pacasoβs investment opportunity ends September 18.
Paid advertisement for Pacasoβs Regulation A offering. Read the offering circular at invest.pacaso.com. Reserving a ticker symbol is not a guarantee that the company will go public. Listing on the NASDAQ is subject to approvals.
Whatβs On
π₯© Heritage Day = National Braai Day = One Night to Connect

In South Africa, 24 September is Heritage Day β a celebration of culture, stories, and the rainbow nationβs spirit. Itβs also known as National Braai Day, because nothing brings people together quite like fire, flavour, and laughter around the grill.
And in London, no place does it better than Vivat Bacchus β a South African restaurant that celebrates the taste of South Africa. This isnβt just a meal; itβs a true slice of home.
π₯© Heritage Day Braai Feast β London, Wed 24 Sept, 18:30
Hosted at Vivat Bacchus, London Bridge, this is their flagship Heritage Day celebration: a sharing feast with biltong, sosaties, boerewors, rib-eye, malva pudding β the works. Tickets are Β£79.50 per person, and last year sold out fast.
Itβs not cheap, but itβs the kind of night that fills you up in more ways than one. If thereβs one event to circle in your diary this month, this is it.

SAFFA Spotlight
π§ Prue Leith Brings It to the Table

Good news for all the Great British Bake Off fans out there β itβs back! And even better: one of our own, Prue Leith, is right there at the heart of it all.
Prue was born in Cape Town in 1940 and studied at St Maryβs School, Waverley, before heading to Paris to train at the Cordon Bleu.
She later made her mark in the UK, opening the Michelin-starred Leithβs restaurant in Notting Hill, founding the renowned Leithβs School of Food and Wine, and building a career as a food writer and broadcaster.
Today, sheβs a Bake Off judge, bringing her trademark warmth, wit, and energy to every episode.
Sarah and I are definite foodies ourselves (we even run a sister magazine called Fatter Platter, celebrating food, life, and good hospitality). Thatβs why Prueβs story resonates so strongly β she reminds us how much joy, flavour, and fun South Africans continue to bring to the tableβ¦ pun fully intended.
Fun Stuff
π΄ From Clay Bullets to Conkers

Back in South Africa, many of us played kleilatjies β scooping wet clay straight from the riverbank, sticking it onto the end of a whippy willow branch, and cracking it like a whip so the clay bullet went flying. Messy, chaotic, and if it hit youβ¦ sore as anything. Basically the forerunner to paintball.
Here in the UK, the tradition is far more civilised: Conkers. You thread a glossy horse chestnut onto string and smash it against your opponentβs. No mud, no bruises β just a shiny nut on a string.
The game dates back to the 1840s (kids originally used snail shells before chestnuts took over), and every October the World Conker Championships are still held in Northamptonshire. Itβs even been banned in some schools β which is funny when youβve survived kleilatjies.
π Pro tip for toughening your conker: drop it in boiling vinegar for a few minutes, then let it dry. Rock-hard!
β οΈ Personal warning from me: I once tried putting conkers in the air fryer to harden them. I donβt recommend it. They explode!
Resource of the Week
π₯ A UK Braai Hack Youβll Love

Itβs braai season in the UK β and yes, the weather may be unpredictable, but that never stopped a South African.
One tool Iβve discovered (and now canβt do without) is a mini handheld air duster. Theyβre sold as gadgets for cleaning keyboards or even blowing snow off windscreens, but on the braai theyβre magic.
Three settings, pocket-sized, and on the lowest power it gives just enough air to get your coals glowing without scattering ash everywhere.
Weβve added it to the SA Connect UK Shop so you can grab one for yourself β itβll change the way you braai.
π Unlock 1,000 Free Courses in the UK
And while youβre stoking the fire, why not sharpen your mind too? The Open Universityβs OpenLearn platform offers nearly 1,000 free online courses β from digital skills and professional development to creative hobbies. Itβs like finding a hidden self-help aisle right here in the UK.
