🌱 The UK Is Waking Up Again

This week Sarah and I both noticed the same thing.

The light in the evenings has changed. The birds are busy again. And for the first time in months it feels like the UK might actually be waking up.

If you’re a South African living here, you’ll know exactly what we mean. The British winter can feel like a long stretch of grey skies and early darkness. When you’re used to sunshine, braais, and outdoor life, it can quietly wear you down.

But something shifts around this time of year.

The Woodland Trust’s Nature’s Calendar is already recording the first real signs of spring β€” rowan buds bursting, blackbirds scouting for nests, and the early flowers starting to push through the soil.

It’s not dramatic like a Highveld spring. It arrives more quietly than that.

But it’s happening.

And just like the season outside, we’re starting to see the same thing inside the SA Connect UK community. People chatting again, sharing tips, reconnecting after a long winter.

Small signs.

But hopeful ones.

And sometimes that’s all you need to get moving again.

Oh β€” and some really good news.

After a few false starts trying to build our Friend Finder, we’ve finally found a solution that actually works.

It’s simple, it’s already bringing Saffas together, and we’re really excited about it.
You’ll find the details right at the bottom of this newsletter β€” take a look when you get there.

We have a feeling you’re going to like it.

Saffa Spotlight

🦏 A Rhino Calf’s First Run

This week a small moment in KwaZulu-Natal reminded many people why conservation work in South Africa matters so much.

At the Zululand Conservation Trust, a rescued white rhino calf β€” orphaned after poaching incidents in the region β€” was finally strong enough to venture outdoors for the first time.

After weeks of careful, round-the-clock rehabilitation, the calf was released into a protected outdoor enclosure where he immediately did what baby rhinos do best: an awkward, joyful gallop across the grass.

For the team caring for him, it was a powerful milestone. Rhino calves that lose their mothers often struggle to survive, and every successful rescue represents years of dedication from conservationists working quietly behind the scenes.

For many South Africans living abroad, stories like this still hit close to home. The wildlife we grew up seeing β€” whether in documentaries, school trips, or family holidays β€” remains one of the country’s greatest treasures.

And moments like this remind us that there are still many people back home fighting hard to protect it.

Saffa Insider

πŸ” The SAFFA Insider Vault Just Got 70% Bigger

Most South Africans arrive in the UK with a powerful habit.

We just get on with it.

But in Britain that habit quietly costs people thousands of pounds a year β€” because there are countless discounts, grants, and hidden systems nobody explains.

We call it The Saffa Tax.

So we built something to fix that.

The SAFFA Insider Vault β€” your practical manual for navigating life in the UK.

And this week it just became 70% bigger.

Inside the Vault

Members are already discovering:

Smart Saffa Money

πŸ“š Your Library Card Is a Hidden Goldmine

Many South Africans in the UK don’t realise just how powerful a simple library card can be.

Most UK libraries now give you completely free access to:

β€’ e-books
β€’ audiobooks
β€’ digital magazines
β€’ newspapers

All through apps like Libby or BorrowBox.

Instead of paying for subscriptions like Audible, you can borrow books instantly on your phone or tablet.

And if winter has left you feeling a bit stuck indoors, it’s also a great way to rediscover the simple pleasure of reading again.

Sometimes the best things in the UK really are free.

Fun Stuff

πŸ’œ The Bluebell Woods Are Coming

One of the most magical things about spring in the UK is about to happen.

In the next few weeks, forests across the country will turn into carpets of wild bluebells β€” millions of tiny purple flowers covering the woodland floor.

If you’ve never seen it before, it’s genuinely breathtaking.

The season usually runs from late March to early May, depending on the weather, and some of the best places to see them include:

β€’ Ashridge Estate (Hertfordshire)
β€’ Micheldever Woods (Hampshire)
β€’ Hallerbos Forest (just across the Channel in Belgium if you fancy a weekend trip)

But honestly, you’ll find beautiful bluebell woods all over Britain β€” often just a short drive away.

It’s one of those simple UK experiences that costs nothing but somehow feels incredibly special.

So if the weather gives you a break one weekend soon, pack a flask of rooibos, take a walk through the woods, and enjoy one of Britain’s most beautiful spring traditions.

What’s On

πŸ‰ Six Nations Final Weekend β€” Saturday

Even without the green and gold on the pitch, the Six Nations final weekend still brings a great atmosphere to pubs across the UK.

Saturday is when the tournament wraps up, and it’s one of those easy excuses to get out of the house, meet a few friends, and soak up a bit of noise after a long winter indoors.

Sometimes the best cure for cabin fever is simply being around people again.

🀠 Country to Country Festival (C2C)

13–15 March | London, Glasgow & Belfast

One of Europe’s biggest country music festivals is happening this weekend.

The Country to Country Festival takes over major arenas like London’s O2 with three days of live music and a big, friendly crowd.

Even if country music isn’t normally your thing, the energy is fantastic and it’s a fun way to shake off the last of the winter blues.

πŸ‰ The Showdown β€” PLAN AHEAD

28 March | Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

If rugby is your happy place, this is worth putting in the diary.

Saracens are hosting a big double-header at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with both the women’s and men’s teams playing.

There’s always a strong Saffa presence at Saracens games, and it usually turns into a proper social outing.

Don’t Miss This

πŸ’ Mother’s Day in the UK β€” This Sunday

A quick heads-up for South Africans in the UK: Mother’s Day here arrives much earlier than the South African date, and many Saffas get caught out every year.

This year it falls on Sunday, 15 March.

Across the UK, restaurants and shops are running special Mother’s Day offers this weekend. Some examples include three-course celebration menus at Miller & Carter, Mother’s Day set menus at Harvester and Zizzi, and family-friendly deals at places like Bella Italia, where some branches are offering complimentary drinks for mums.

If you’d rather celebrate at home, shops like Marks & Spencer are running their popular Mother’s Day meal deal (around Β£20), which includes a main and several sides β€” an easy way to create a special lunch without spending the whole day in the kitchen.

The key thing to know is that Mother’s Day Sunday lunches are one of the busiest restaurant days of the year in the UK, so booking ahead is usually a good idea.

Saffa tip: South Africa celebrates Mother’s Day later in the year, and by the time May arrives most UK shops have already cleared out their Mother’s Day cards. If you’re planning to send a card home, it’s a good idea to grab an extra card now while they’re still on the shelves.

For South Africans, family occasions like this tend to mean a lot. Even something small β€” lunch together, a walk, or a cup of tea and a proper catch-up β€” can turn the day into a really special moment.

Coming Up

🌷 Festival season

From April onwards the country comes alive with outdoor events β€” music festivals, food markets, village fairs, cultural celebrations, and community gatherings happening almost every weekend.

For South Africans who love being outdoors, it’s one of the best parts of living in the UK.

So next week we’re putting together a Saffa-friendly guide to the UK festival calendar β€” highlighting some of the most interesting events coming up this spring and summer.

It’s the perfect excuse to get out, explore new places, and enjoy the longer days ahead.

SA Connect UK Website

🀝 Friend Finder β€” A Quick Update

One of the main reasons we started SA Connect UK was simple:
South Africans are stronger when we’re connected to each other.

Moving countries can feel isolating sometimes. You might be the only Saffa in your office, your street, or even your town.

So we’ve been trying to build a way for readers to find and connect with other South Africans nearby.

Our first attempt was a Friend Finder system that matched people by county. The idea was good, but the coding behind it proved tricky.

Our second attempt technically worked, but it was very manual. With Saffas spread all across the UK, it became difficult to match people quickly enough.

So we’ve taken a simpler approach.

We’ve started a SA Connect UK WhatsApp community β€” and it’s already beginning to work beautifully.

People are introducing themselves, asking questions, sharing tips, and helping each other navigate life in the UK.

Think of it as a digital braai fire where Saffas across the country can gather.

If you’d like to be part of it, join us here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/EGBebyhSI9r05ln38oYPy6

The more of us there are, the more useful it becomes for everyone.

Because when South Africans connect, opportunities appear, friendships form, and life in the UK gets a whole lot easier.

Real-World Ads, Simple to Run

With AdQuick, executing Out Of Home campaigns is as easy as running digital ads. Plan, deploy, and measure your real-world advertising effortlessly β€” so your team can scale campaigns and maximize impact without the headaches.

🌿 Final Thought

One thing we hear again and again from South Africans living in the UK is this:

β€œIt’s hard to make friends here.”

And sometimes it can be.

Life gets busy. People are spread out. Everyone seems to be rushing somewhere.

But the moment Saffas start connecting with each other, something changes.

Advice gets shared. Opportunities appear. Friendships form. And suddenly the whole experience of living here feels lighter.

The truth is simple: the more good people you know, the more options you have in life.

That’s really what SA Connect UK is about.

Helping South Africans find each other, share knowledge, and build the kind of community that makes life abroad feel a little more like home.

If today’s edition made you think of another South African who might enjoy it, please send it their way.

Because every new reader makes this community stronger.

Warmly
Troy & Sarah πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦
