Welcome
πΏ How to properly enjoy the UKβ¦

Letβs be honest for a second.
South Africans know how to enjoy life.
We know sport.
We know food.
We know how to get people together and make something out of nothing.
Weβre not beginners when it comes to living well.
And the truth is⦠the UK actually has a lot going for it.
Great sport, beautiful countryside, and a way of life that can be really enjoyable once you tap into it.
The trick isnβt forcing it.
Itβs knowing where to look.
Because some of the best parts of life here are simple, local, and easier than you think.
So this week, weβre keeping it easy.
A few ideas and a few reminders to help you enjoy life here a bit more.
Saffa Spotlight
πΏ A small way to help
Over the past few weeks, weβve been spending a lot of time thinking about someone we were very close to in South Africa.
Sarah and I recently lost them after a journey with dementia.
They had good care β really good care β and for that weβre incredibly grateful.
But if youβve ever seen dementia up close, youβll knowβ¦ it takes a lot from everyone.
So weβve decided to do something small, but meaningful.
Weβre taking part in a sponsored walk for dementia, as a way of giving something back and raising a bit of awareness.
It also brought something else into focus for us.
Thereβs something many South Africans in the UK carry quietly in the background:
βAre my parents actually okay back home?β
Not just financially.
Not just on paper.
But day to day. In real life.
Who checks in if something feels off?
Who helps after a hospital visit?
Itβs not always easy to manage that from another country.
Thatβs why weβve chosen to share something a little different this week.
Weβve partnered with Extra Hands, a South Africa-based service that supports families here in the UK by caring for elderly parents back home.
They act as a trusted, on-the-ground presence β from regular check-ins to post-hospital support and day-to-day help.
Itβs one of those things many people donβt realise existsβ¦ but once you know, it can make a real difference.

π Getting documents certified (without the runaround)

We ran into this recently and thought it was worth sharing.
In South Africa, itβs simple.
You walk into a police station, hand over your documents, show your IDβ¦ and itβs done.
Quick. Easy. Free.
The UK does things a little differently.
Police stations often donβt offer this service β and even finding one thatβs open can be a bit of a mission.
The obvious option is a solicitorβ¦ but that usually means booking an appointment and paying more than youβd expect.
What we found works best?
π Your local Post Office.
We popped in, met a friendly lady behind the counter⦠and within a few minutes it was all sorted.
It cost around Β£12.75 for one to three copies.
While we found an easier way to get things done in the UK, it can still be quite tricky getting documents sorted in South Africa.
Weβve come across a really helpful service called Apostil that handles things like certifications, apostilles, and general paperwork on the ground.
If you need help with South African documents, theyβre well worth a look.
π½οΈ Kids eat free (perfect for the Easter Holidays)

With the Easter holidays coming up, this is a really handy one β especially if youβve got kids and want to get out without spending a fortune.
There are quite a few places across the UK that quietly run βkids eat freeβ or very cheap meal deals during school holidays.
For example:
Morrisons cafΓ©s β kids eat free when you spend Β£5 on an adult meal
Dunelm (Pausa cafΓ©s) β free kidsβ meal when you spend around Β£4
ASK Italian / Bella Italia β often run kids eat free or Β£1 deals with an adult main during holidays
YO! Sushi β kids eat free during school holidays with a paying adult
There are plenty more β pubs, cafΓ©s, even some supermarket restaurants β but those are a good place to start.
Itβs not always heavily advertised, but once you know to look for it, you start spotting these deals everywhere.
If youβre planning a few outings over Easter, itβs well worth checking ahead β you can often turn a family meal into something surprisingly affordable.
A small win⦠but it all adds up.
Donβt Miss This
β° Quick One: The clocks change this Sunday
This is one of those small things thatβs easy to miss.
The clocks go forward this Sunday, one hour ahead and only an hour difference between SA and the UK.
Thatβs it.
But itβs exactly the kind of thing that catches you out if youβve had a busy week.
The upside?
Lighter evenings.
A bit more breathing space at the end of the day.
And that small shift can make a bigger difference than youβd expect.
πΈ If you click one thing this week, make it thisβ¦

If youβre looking for something simple to do over the next few weeks, this is a good place to start.
The UKβs blossom season is just getting going β and it doesnβt last long.
Parks, gardens, and even ordinary streets start to come alive for a short window each year.
Whatβs On
πΆ A South African jazz night in London

If youβre in London and feel like something a little different, this could be a lovely night out.
South African musician Adam Glasser is performing on 3 April, bringing that relaxed, township jazz feel with him.
Itβs not a big production β just good music, a warm atmosphere, and something that feels a little familiar.
πΏ A Gentle way to get out β Holland Park Walk
If youβre in London and want something quieter, thereβs a Spring Tree Walk happening in Holland Park (mid-April).
Itβs simple, low-cost, and surprisingly enjoyable β especially this time of year.
The kind of thing you wouldnβt normally think to doβ¦ but often ends up being just right.
Fun Stuff
π³ A simple one weβve actually used ourselves
When Sarah and I first moved to the UK, we had young children⦠and not a lot of spare money.
So we started looking for things to do that wouldnβt cost much, just to get out of the house and explore a bit.
Thatβs how we found the National Trust.
At the time, we didnβt think much of it.
But it turned out to be one of the easiest ways to spend a really good day.
You get access to:
beautiful walks
gardens
historic places
and quiet spots youβd never normally find
You can visit some places for free, or get a membership that gives you entry across the UK (and often parking too).
And this time of year is when it really shines.
Everythingβs starting to come into bloom, the days are getting longerβ¦ and itβs just a nice way to slow things down a bit.
SA Connect UK Website
π€ Find a friend
Our Find a Friend WhatsApp community is now up and running β and itβs already starting to feel like a proper little Saffa corner of the UK.
People are chatting (mostly about the weatherβ¦ of course π), sharing bits and pieces, and slowly getting to know each other.
Once youβre in, youβll see a few different chats:
π¬ General β this is where most of the chatting happens, so head straight there
β Meet Ups β coffees, braais, and getting together
π Buy & Sell β for passing things on within the community
πΌ Jobs & Opportunities β for anything work-related or helpful leads
Itβs all very relaxed β no pressure, just a simple way to feel a bit more connected.
Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.
Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing β no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.
Coming Up
πΏ Coming up next week
Next week, weβre going to look at something a lot of people quietly think aboutβ¦ but donβt always talk about.
How to feel more settled in the UK β without forcing it.
Not big life changes.
Not dramatic decisions.
Just small shifts, small habits, and a few perspectives that can make life here feel a bit more like your own.
Weβll also share a few simple ways to get out and explore a bit more - including things like English Heritage, which opens up a whole different side of the UK that many people donβt realise is there.
Sign-Off
β€οΈ Longer eveningsβ¦
Thatβs it from us this week.
Itβs been a fun one to put together and we hope you found something useful (or at least something that made you smile).
Longer evenings are on the way⦠so get out there and enjoy it a bit.
Weβll see you next Saturday.
