Life Hack of the Week
❄️ The Warm Water Bottle Trick for Frozen Mornings

South Africans love garages. If your car sleeps outside in SA, there’s a good chance it may not be there in the morning.
In the UK, garages are more like extra storage rooms — lawnmowers inside, cars outside.
Which means winter mornings often start with a windscreen frozen solid and doors glued shut by ice. Not the best way to kick off your day.
Here’s the Smart Saffa fix:
Keep a small hot water bottle in your work bag — filled with warm water (not hot!).
Small bottles heat quickly, wipe easily across the glass, and fit neatly in your bag.
Warm water melts the ice instantly without risking cracks in the glass.
And — look at that — it’s your lucky day. 😄
We just so happen to have the perfect size mini hot water bottle right here:

SAFFA Spotlight
🇿🇦 J.R.R. Tolkien

The South African who became Author of the Millennium
Before hobbits roamed across movie screens…
before a ring nearly destroyed Middle-earth…
there was a baby boy in Bloemfontein.
Yes — J.R.R. Tolkien, the mind behind The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was born right here in South Africa in 1892.
He spent his early childhood under the big Free State skies before moving to England — carrying with him memories of wild weather, wide-open landscapes, and more than a little sense of adventure.
And here’s the cool part:
Tolkien hasn’t just been crowned Author of the Century…
he’s since been celebrated as Author of the Millennium.
A Bloemfontein boy — inspiring billions.
Today, new books based on his unpublished writings continue to be released, and modern film and TV projects are bringing Middle-earth to a whole new generation.
Not bad for a Saffa kid from Bloem.
When South Africans tell stories… we make the world believe in magic.
Did you know? Tolkien’s earliest childhood memory was a South African spider — which some think inspired Shelob. 🕷️
Fun Stuff
🪂 Indoor Skydiving in the UK — No Plane Required

If you’ve ever wanted to skydive without the whole falling-out-of-a-plane bit — this is your moment.
Indoor skydiving gives you the free-fall feeling in a giant vertical wind tunnel.
No parachute. No fear of heights. Just pure adrenaline and a great photo for the group chat.
Best spots in the UK:
• iFLY London (O2 Arena) — iconic location + easy transport
• iFLY Manchester — perfect for a weekend adventure
• iFLY Basingstoke — popular for families and first-timers
• The Bear Grylls Adventure (Birmingham) — extra challenges if you’re feeling spicy
Sessions usually include a quick training, gear rental, and 2–4 flight bursts that feel like the real thing.
💡 Smart Saffa Tip:
Book off-peak (weekday evenings) — cheaper, quieter, and more “I can actually do this” energy.
Sports Corner
🏉 Test Rugby — Find Your Local Pub & Big Screen

The Boks may not be on the field this weekend…
but there are massive matches worth watching with fellow Saffas:
🇮🇪 Ireland vs Wales — Six Nations Warm-Up
Top-tier rugby — and a great excuse to find a pub where someone shouts “Skaaaalk!” at the ref.
🏉 Premiership Rugby — Saracens at Home
London’s powerhouse club with a stadium full of noise and nice mullets.
💡 Smart Saffa Tip:
Book trains early on match days — otherwise it’s basically the sardine trick from the Vaal Dam.
Find a Saffa-friendly pub → grab a beer & a boerie roll → instant community.
Resource of the Week
👨👩👧 Child Benefit — Free Money for Families in the UK
If you’ve got kids (or planning some soon), this is a must-know.
Child Benefit is a tax-free weekly payment from the UK government — available to almost every family with children under 16 (or under 20 if they’re still in education).
And yes — South Africans on legal work/spouse/ancestry visas qualify.
💷 What You Get
£25.60 per week for your first/only child
£16.95 per week for each additional child
That’s up to £2,000+ a year back in your pocket — extra help with school uniforms, clubs, groceries, or that flight home for Ouma’s birthday.
🟢 Why this matters for Saffas
UK childcare is expensive (especially around London).
Child Benefit helps soften the blow — and counts toward your state pension too.
It’s one of the easiest wins for new families here.
🔍 Eligibility (the short version)
You can claim if:
You live in the UK
You’re responsible for a child living with you most of the time
If you earn over £60k, there may be a tax adjustment — but even then, it can still be worth claiming for the pension credits.
🏁 How to Claim — Fast and Simple
Apply online at gov.uk/child-benefit
You’ll need your NI number + child’s details
Payments arrive weekly or every 4 weeks
Can backdate up to 3 months — free money you might’ve missed
💡 Smart Saffa Tip:
If your child was born before you moved here and is joining you soon — you may still claim from when they arrive.
The daily health habit you’ll actually stick with…
This time of year, it’s SO hard to stay healthy.
That’s why you need a daily habit that’s easy.
Meet AG1: With just one quick scoop, you’ll support your immune health, gut health, energy, and fill nutrient gaps.
